Now, since 2016, cannabis for industrial and medicinal use has also been made legal. This was done mainly to support the industrial hemp farmers in Italy.
There are several ‘cannabis shops’ in Rome, and you will be quite surprised to see a new one popping up at every street corner. However, the cannabis sold in these shops is ‘light cannabis,’ with a very low THC content.
Now, here is where it gets interesting.
All of these items found in the shops are ‘collector’s items’ and can be taken back home as souvenirs. They are not meant to eat or smoke.
But then again, what you do within the privacy of your own home is your own business.
Law Enforcement
In Rome, the cops are pretty chilled out about cannabis. Although it is illegal, it has been decriminalized for personal use. You can possess up to 5 grams of cannabis on you, and maybe even smoke in public. If a cop is somehow unpleased, he might just confiscate the weed and lay a fine on you, but that’s about it.
If you want to smoke some bud in public, then make sure you are not doing it in public spaces, or right in front of the cops. That is just disrespectful. As long as you are discreet, you will be just fine. The laws are pretty relaxed.

If you are looking to buy your cannabis from street dealers, then prepare to be disappointed. The quality is quite mediocre, and there are high chances of you getting ripped off as well. However, you can also buy cannabis products from legal stores.
The only catch is, you cannot smoke. But you might still be able to enjoy the cannabis trip. So it is up to you.
Prices of Cannabis
If you buy your cannabis as ‘collectibles’ from the legal stores, the prices will vary according to the kind of product you buy.
However, the price for weed on the streets is 10 Euros for about 0.7 to 1.5 grams. For 20 Euros, you can get 2 to 3 grams, and for 50 Euros, 6 to 12 grams.
You can also buy hash for about the same price.
But remember to negotiate. You might be able to decrease the price by a few Euros. Most importantly, try and not buy anything without measuring the quantity first, or you will end up paying a lot for a much smaller amount.
